Start in Tyria or Cantha?
I currently only play in Prophecies and I am considering getting Factions (since most of my guildies have). I have one question to all the knowledgible people here. If I start say a Necro in Cantha will I have to go back and forth between Cantha and Tyria for the chapter specific skills? Or does Factions have all the skills that Prophecies have (or their equivalents atleast).
1> Has anyone had a problem starting a character of particular profession in Cantha because of the lack of some skills there? 2> What's the place in Cantha from which you can go back to Tyria? What level are people when they generally get there? |

Yes, you need to obtain each chapter's skills in that chapter. Core skills are available in any chapter.
1> No, but limited experience. 2> It is on the guildwars.com update notes. You level much quicker in Factions so you'll be high levelk if not 20 by the time you get there. |

Unless you are starting a Ritualist or Assassin - I would definitely say start in Tyria. Unless you like purchasing all of your skills, and not having as many choices on what build to play for a long time. I DEEPLY regret starting my Warrior in Cantha. Paying 1k a skill is no fun. You get to Level 20 much quicker in Cantha, but without all of the skills, it's just not as much fun...

I'm thinking of starting a monk in TYRIA, for the pure reason of getting all core skills than buying the faction skills in CANTHA. Having all the skills in Tyria would help monking in Cantha a hundred fold.
Eh you can't start a ritualist or an assassin in Tyria I believe? |

Id start in Cantha. You level up faster. The missions give you plenty of Exp.
Easier to ascend. I havent had any problems with the number of skill points yet. You get to choose which skills to get, so if you know the profession, you really dont have to waste points on useless skills. By the time you finish all the quests you should have enough skill points to get all the skills of your primary with elites and then some. |

You CAN get skill quest's in Tyria if you start in Cantha - you just can't get any quest's prior to LA. There are plenty of quest's after LA which provide skills as a reward, and these quest's ARE available to Cantha character's. You will NOT get any Ritualist or Assassin skills from these quest's however.

Just as a suggestion, if you're deciding playing an entirely new character concept, I highly advise starting it in Tyria. Prophecies' skills are referred to as "core" for a good reason; they are core to the game. They were the original skills, and are the backbone of the Guild Wars game. Factions' skills are basically new ideas that compliment old skills or encourage new build ideas. If it's a Monk, the skills obtained in Tyria are invaluable - Word of Healing, Mark of Protection, and so on. How could you play a Mesmer without knowing the use of Ineptitude? The same goes for every class, the core elite skills and regular skills give you the simplest, most direct concept of what that class is about. Also, you will end up with a wealth of skills just by completing quests and accepting the rewards - for free!
Outside of your starter skills obtained in a few quests in Cantha, you are forced to buy every skill after that point. Furthermore, Cantha is obviously driven toward high-level content, and immediately rushes you to level 20 in less than ~10 hours of gameplay. So why not enjoy your game time, taking your time to level up and exploring lower-level areas? By starting in Tyria and not having access to the Shing Jea island missions, you really aren't missing anything. But by starting in Cantha and not having access to the first 7 Tyrian missions, you're missing out on a lot. Plus, Pre-searing Ascalon is beautiful! So for starting a new character, Tyria > Cantha - by far. Hopefully this will aid you in your decision. Last edited by Rayne Nightfyre; May 16, 2006 at 12:26 AM // 00:26.. |

If you start in Cantha you have 7 missions you are locked out of forever, as opposed to 3 if you start in tyria. If it wasnt for the really great shing jea area, I woulnt start in Cantha if I had a choice.

And I'm not sure if you'll be able to achieve cartographer status on one continent if you start on the other, since a lot of the territory in the early missions will be unavailable to your character. Not good, in my opinion.

It all depends on what you want to do.
If you want to play level 20 quickly then canthan, if you want to go slow then tyria. If you want skills quests--tyria, if you want to BUY most of your skills--cantha. If you want storage immediately--cantha So it depends on what you want. My advice (for what its worth), if you have already done a bunch of characters in tyria I would do one in cathan to see if you like the difference....if you have done neither (your first character) I would start in tyria where you can learn more slowly how to use your skills and such before being dumped into level 20 situations. Either way you can always delete the character and start over. and goodluck in whichever you choose! |
